Reflection

After my tutorial today with Adele I feel really happy with how the project is progressing and confident in what I will be teaching the children in my session and that my final costumes will look great. Over all my blog is at a good standard and I have inlcuded all the relevent information about any tutorial or workshops but I need to include more reflection.

Thinking back to the begining of this project I was so excited to get stuck in and start a project that I felt passionate about. Working with children or in a team gives me alot of pleasure because I enjoy having a response or some reward from my work; someone to bounce off of or come up with ideas that I couldn't have thought of by myself. Children are brilliant at giving honest feedback and I really enjoy working in a teaching environment so I know I will feel completely relaxed during my placement.

I wouldnt say that 'carnivals' are where I want to eventually end up but this type of creative, flamboyant, recycle and reuse project is what I feel really comfortable in. I joined the Costume with Performance design course in 2009 with this passion for costume that was based on a love for Cirque Du Soleil. I've written about them in my Professional Environment case study and in various essays so when this oppurtunity came up I snapped at it. The wild and over the top carnival costumes and freedom to design so loosely are as close as I can get at the moment to what excites me within costume.

I really enjoyed learning the many historical techniques and skills during my first and second year making corsets, doublets for Mask of the Red death, learning how to cut on the stand, pattern draft etc etc. I came to this course with barely any garment construction experience but a huge willingess to learn. I soaked up everything I could during those heavily taught and structured first session and I now feel I have some strong making skills and a confidence in myself and my designs.

Designs

This is my intial final sketch. This was no way good enough to present to Sarah or the teacher of my class.

Here I have uploaded my final design. They show how the umbrella would look against the t-shirts and also the willow jellyfish in proportion to the children. I used a template for the children because I really struggle with drawing in proportion and my previous designs were not clear enough as well as not being very proffesional. This instantly helped my designs look more life like and I am able to portray my ideas more clearly. I would be happier taking these to a production meeting or design tutorial as I feel they portray how the children will look and feel whilst wearing the costumes.
